The 2023 biographical drama-thriller Tetris, directed by Jon S. Baird and starring Taron Egerton, transforms the unlikely true story of a falling-block puzzle game into a high-stakes Cold War espionage thriller. Rather than focusing purely on computer programming, the film dives headfirst into corporate greed, international corruption, and the fierce legal war to control one of the most valuable intellectual properties in gaming history.

1. The Discovery and the Gamble

The story begins in 1988. Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) is a Dutch-American entrepreneur and video game developer living in Tokyo, struggling to keep his small company afloat. While attending a software trade show, he stumbles across an early version of Tetris, created by Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov).

Instantly mesmerized by its addictive simplicity, Henk recognizes its universal appeal. He gambles everything—mortgaging his home and taking out massive loans—to secure the Japanese console and computer rights, believing it is destined to change the industry.

2. A Fragmented Web of Rights

Henk soon discovers that securing Tetris is a legal minefield. The rights have been sliced, diced, and mistakenly oversold to multiple competing entities through a tangled chain of intermediaries.

  • Mirrorsoft: Media mogul Robert Maxwell and his slick son Kevin claim to hold the global rights, attempting to bully their way into total dominance.
  • Nintendo: Behind the scenes, Nintendo is preparing to launch its revolutionary handheld device—the Game Boy. Executives Howard Lincoln and Minoru Arakawa realize that bundling Tetris with the console will make it an unstoppable cultural phenomenon, turning the licensing battle into a multi-million-dollar war.

3. Journey Behind the Iron Curtain

To cut through the chaos, Henk makes a daring, unauthorized trip directly to Moscow, Soviet Russia, operating right under the nose of the KGB. He intends to deal directly with ELORG, the rigid state-run agency tasked with exporting Soviet software.

In Moscow, Henk manages to meet Alexey Pajitnov face-to-face. Despite the language barrier and constant state surveillance, the two men form a genuine friendship built on a shared passion for gaming. However, Henk quickly realizes he is walking through a political trap. Corrupt Soviet officials, including KGB-linked operatives like Valentin Trifonov, see the game as a political bargaining chip and try to manipulate the bidding war to line their own pockets.

4. The Climax and Escape

As the Soviet Union edges closer to collapse, the tension peaks. The Maxwell family attempts aggressive corporate sabotage, while Soviet authorities pressure Henk and threaten his safety. Navigating double-dealings, tapped phones, and high-pressure negotiations, Henk fights to secure the handheld rights for Nintendo just before rival bids can lock him out.

The movie crescendos into a tense, cinematic race against time as Henk works to finalize the contract and help smuggle Alexey’s work—and eventually Alexey and his family—out of a changing Soviet Union.

5. Epilogue

The film concludes with the triumphant launch of Tetris alongside the Game Boy, turning it into a historic global sensation. Henk and Alexey go on to found The Tetris Company, finally giving the Russian programmer legal ownership, recognition, and financial freedom for his legendary creation.
