The Rising Star of Pop-Opera: The Journey of Johannes Pietsch (JJ)

Johannes Pietsch—internationally known by his stage name JJ—has taken the European music scene by storm. Blending classical vocal mastery with modern pop sensibilities, the Austrian singer-songwriter captured global attention by winning the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

Early Life and Cultural Roots

Born on April 29, 2001, in Vienna, Austria, Pietsch comes from a diverse background. With an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, he spent a significant portion of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

This multicultural upbringing deeply shaped his artistic identity:

  • Pop and Karaoke: Family karaoke parties in Dubai introduced him to the vibrant energy of pop music.
  • Classical Influence: His father introduced him to the profound world of classical music and opera.
  • Returning to Vienna: In 2016, his family moved back to Vienna, where Pietsch formally immersed himself in rigorous musical education at the opera school of the Vienna State Opera and later the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna.

The Path to Recognition

Before achieving international stardom, Pietsch steadily built his craft through high-profile television talent platforms:

  • The Voice UK (2020): He competed in the ninth series under the guidance of coach will.i.am, advancing all the way to the Knockouts.
  • Starmania (2021): He showcased his unique vocal control on the fifth season of Austria’s Starmania, reaching the final stage shows.

Through these experiences, he refined a distinctive pop-opera style. As a sopranist (a high-range countertenor), Pietsch possesses a vocal range that effortlessly stretches into soaring soprano heights, offering listeners a deeply emotional and theatrical experience.

Eurovision Triumph and Current Endeavors

The defining milestone of Pietsch’s career arrived on May 17, 2025, when he represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest. Performing the powerful pop-opera anthem “Wasted Love”—which he co-wrote—he triumphed in the Grand Final with an impressive 436 points, winning the jury vote.
