How to Add Your Own Music to Spotify

Have you ever recorded a track, mixed a mixtape, or found a rare bootleg that isn’t on streaming, and wished you could just play it right alongside your favorite mainstream hits?

Good news: you can. Spotify offers a feature called Local Files that lets you import your own audio files from your computer or phone and stream them directly through the Spotify app. You can even add them to playlists, download them to your mobile devices, and listen offline.

Here is the complete, step-by-step guide to bringing your personal music collection into your Spotify library.

Phase 1: Enable Local Files on Desktop

The easiest way to set this up is on a desktop computer (Mac or PC), because once your files are in a Spotify playlist on your desktop, you can easily sync them to your phone.

  1. Open Spotify on your computer and click on your Profile icon in the top-right corner.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Scroll down until you find the Local Files section.
  4. Toggle the switch to Show audio files from this computer to On.
  5. Once turned on, Spotify will automatically show folders like Downloads and My Music. You can click Add a source to select any specific folder on your computer where your music files (MP3, M4A, or FLAC) are stored.

Pro Tip: Make sure your music files are properly tagged with metadata (Song Title, Artist, Album, and Cover Art) using a tag editor like Mp3tag or iTunes before adding them. Spotify reads these tags to display your tracks correctly.

Phase 2: Create a Local Files Playlist

Now that Spotify can see your files, you need to corral them into a playlist so you can play them on other devices.

  1. In the left sidebar of the desktop app, click on Your Library.
  2. Look for a new automatically generated playlist called Local Files. Click into it.
  3. You will see a list of all the compatible audio files Spotify found in your designated folders.
  4. Select the tracks you want, right-click, choose Add to playlist, and create a New Playlist (let’s call it “My Custom Tracks”).

Phase 3: Sync and Listen on Your Phone

To listen to these tracks on your mobile device (iOS or Android), you just need to connect the devices and download the playlist.

  1. Check your Wi-Fi: Ensure your phone and your computer are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Log in: Make sure you are logged into the exact same Spotify account on both devices.
  3. Open Spotify on your phone: Navigate to the “My Custom Tracks” playlist you just created on your computer.
  4. Download the playlist: Tap the Download button (the downward-facing arrow icon). Because your computer is on the same network and houses the source files, Spotify will transfer the audio files directly over your local network onto your phone.

Once the download is complete, those tracks will play seamlessly on your mobile device just like any other song.

Important Things to Keep in Mind

  • File Formats: Spotify supports MP3, M4A, and FLAC (though iTunes-exclusive formats like ALAC or DRM-protected files won’t play).
  • Subscription Status: While Local Files work for both Free and Premium users, the ability to sync and download them to your mobile device requires a Spotify Premium subscription.
  • Keep the Source Files Where They Are: If you delete or move the music files on your computer’s hard drive, Spotify will lose the source and grey out the tracks on your phone.
