The Age of Me: Why “Customisation” Is the Ultimate Modern Currency

We live in an era of mass everything. Billions of identical smartphones roll off automated assembly lines; identical fast-fashion trends flood global markets; and algorithmic feeds serve the exact same viral content to millions of screens simultaneously.

Yet, beneath this ocean of uniformity, a quiet revolution is taking place. We are obsessed with making things ours.

Whether you spell it with an s (customisation) or a z (customization), the desire to tailor, tweak, and personalize our physical and digital worlds has evolved from a luxury perk into a fundamental expectation. But how did we get here, and what does our obsession with tailoring say about who we are?

From Mass Production to “Mass Me”

For the better part of the 20th century, the industrial model was simple: Henry Ford’s famous philosophy—“You can have any color you want, as long as it’s black”—reigned supreme. Efficiency meant uniformity.

As technology advanced, manufacturers realized they didn’t have to choose between scale and specificity. Computer-aided design, modular manufacturing, and advanced logistics birthed mass customization: the ability to deliver customized goods and services on a global scale at near mass-production prices.
