Was Vikas Divyakirti an IAS Officer? Clearing Up the Confusion
To answer the question directly: Yes, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti cleared the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination and became a civil servant, but he was technically never an IAS (Indian Administrative Service) officer.
Instead, his brief career inside India’s government bureaucracy took a different path before he transitioned into the role that would make him a household name: an educator, mentor, and founder of Drishti IAS.
The nuance behind his civil services journey sheds light on how a successful bureaucrat transformed into one of India’s most influential educators.
Cracking the Code: The 1996 UPSC Success
Long before he became famous for decoding the complexities of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams for millions of students, Vikas Divyakirti sat for the examination himself.
In 1996, writing the civil services exam on his first attempt at a young age, he successfully cleared all three grueling stages (Prelims, Mains, and Interview). He secured an impressive All India Rank (AIR) 384.
However, securing a rank in the civil services exam does not automatically mean an appointment to the IAS. The UPSC allocates successful candidates to various central and all-India services—such as the IAS, IPS, IFS, and Central Secretariat Service (CSS)—based on their rank, preferences, and available vacancies.
Divyakirti was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS). Under this service, he was appointed as a Section Officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
Why Did He Leave Government Service?
For most aspirants, clearing the UPSC exam and securing a central government position is the ultimate career pinnacle. For Divyakirti, however, the desk job did not align with his inner calling.
Driven by a deep passion for literature, academics, and teaching, he realized that bureaucratic files and administrative routines were not where he belonged. After serving in the Ministry of Home Affairs for a brief period—roughly a year in total—he made the bold decision to resign from government service.
He chose to walk away from a secure, prestigious government career to return to academia. He went on to pursue higher education extensively, earning multiple degrees including a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Hindi Literature from the University of Delhi.
The Birth of Drishti IAS
With a profound understanding of the civil services syllabus and a desire to bridge the gap for aspirants—particularly those coming from Hindi-medium backgrounds who often faced structural disadvantages—Divyakirti started teaching small batches of students.
In November 1999, he formally established Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi, starting with modest resources and a rented classroom. Over the decades, the institute evolved into one of India’s most prominent coaching and educational platforms for civil services preparation, expanding its reach digitally through widely watched YouTube channels and online programs.
