Behind the Screen: The Childhood and Early Roots of Song Kang

Before he captured global hearts as the “Son of Netflix” starring in hits like Love Alarm, Sweet Home, and My Demon, Song Kang was just an ordinary kid growing up in Suwon, South Korea. Long before flashbulbs, red carpets, and massive fandoms, his early years were shaped by a quiet household, creative influences, and a winding path of self-discovery.

A Household of Art and Athletics

Born on April 23, 1994, Song Kang grew up in a close-knit family of four, which includes his parents and a younger brother born in 1998. His home environment was a unique blend of physical discipline and artistic expression:

  • The Athlete Father: His father was a former artistic gymnast, instilling an appreciation for physical fitness, structure, and hard work early on.
  • The Musical Mother: His mother worked as a piano teacher, filling their home with the daily sounds of classical melodies and rhythm.

Interestingly, his parents originally debated giving him a different moniker—Song Kanggeun—before ultimately settling on just Song Kang.

Growing Pains and Figuring Out the Future

Unlike many child stars who spend their youth auditioning for commercials or taking acting classes, Song Kang’s adolescence was surprisingly grounded. By his own admission, he wasn’t entirely sure what he wanted to do with his life during his school years at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School.

He spent a lot of time trying out different hobbies, exploring athletics, and figuring out his place in the world. He even tried his hand at various physical disciplines, including kendo. However, a major turning point arrived when he watched Leonardo DiCaprio’s powerhouse performance in Titanic. Captivated by the sheer emotion and impact of DiCaprio’s acting, a teenage Song Kang felt a sudden, lightning-bolt realization: he wanted to evoke those same feelings in people. That cinematic spark planted the seed for his future career.

The Road to Konkuk University

With a newfound dream of becoming an actor, Song Kang dedicated himself to his craft. He eventually enrolled in the Department of Film Arts at the prestigious Konkuk University, a famous breeding ground for top-tier Korean talent.

Before landing his official television debut in the 2017 series The Liar and His Lover, he faced the typical uncertainties of any young adult trying to break into a competitive industry. Interestingly, before committing entirely to acting, he was scouted multiple times by K-pop idol agencies. He turned them down because his heart was set strictly on the silver screen and dramatic arts.

From Quiet Kid to Global Star

Looking back at his upbringing, it’s easy to see how pieces of Song Kang’s childhood found their way into his adult life. The athletic discipline passed down from his gymnast father likely fueled his notorious dedication to fitness and gym routines, while his mother’s musical background gave him a deep appreciation for emotional expression.

From a quiet boy in Suwon trying to figure out his future to one of the most recognizable faces in modern K-dramas, Song Kang’s journey proves that big dreams often start with a single moment of inspiration.
